The Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail: Ride Out, Walk the Coast

The Maha'ulepu trail is a walk, not a ride. Here is how to get out to the trailhead on a bike, where to leave it, and what the two miles of coast past Shipwreck are actually like.

Almost everything we write about the South Shore is about riding. This one is different.

The Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail is the best two miles of coastline on this side of the island, and you cannot ride a single foot of it. That is not a problem. It just means the bike gets you to the start and then waits for you.

What is actually out there

The trail runs from the far end of Shipwreck Beach east along the coast to Punahoa Point. Two miles out, two miles back. Cliffs of lithified sand dune, ironwood trees leaning off the edge, and open ocean the entire way. No buildings, no road noise, and usually not many people.

It is not a hard walk. It is also not a paved path. You are on sand, packed dirt and rock, with a few stretches that turn muddy for a day or two after rain.

Most people do not walk the whole thing, and there is no reason you have to. The first stretch past Shipwreck gives you the cliffs and the views, so turning around whenever you feel like it still gets you the best of it.

Getting there on a bike

This is the same eastward route we give everyone, and it is the good one regardless of the construction.

Leaving the shop, head south to the public walking path just past us and walk your bike down. You come out on Hoone Road. Turn left. Hoone becomes Pe'e Road on its own, no turn needed, and it curves north to bring you out at the Poipu Road and Ala Kinoiki junction.

Pe'e Road is the nicer ride by a long way. Sidewalks, slow traffic, and it is genuinely scenic. There are a few hills, which is what the electric assist is for.

The Ala Kinoiki junction is being rebuilt as a roundabout, so plan on walking the bike through that part. Then head east on Poipu Road. There is a stretch of roadwork on that side too, walk it, and after that the road is clear the rest of the way out past the Hyatt.

Figure about ten minutes to Shipwreck Beach and fifteen out to the trail access.

Where the bike waits

You will be leaving the bike at the Shipwreck Beach parking lot, at the end of Poipu Road past the Hyatt. There is a restroom building there and that is the most likely place to find something to lock to. We would rather not promise you a rack though, so ask us at the counter before you head out and we will tell you where to put it.

A lock and a helmet come with every rental at no extra charge. Our one ask is the usual one, which is that you use the lock every time you walk away from the bike. It matters a little more on this ride than most, because you are going to be gone a couple of hours instead of twenty minutes.

What the walk is actually like

Bring water. There is almost no shade out there, and the stretch past Shipwreck is fully exposed.

Wear real shoes. Slippers are fine for the beach and wrong for this. The rock is uneven and the sand is deep in places.

Go in the morning if you can. The light is better, the wind is usually kinder, and you are not walking four miles of open coast in the middle of the afternoon.

What to respect out there

This part matters more than the logistics.

Maha'ulepu is private land, owned and managed by Grove Farm, and the public gets to be there because they allow it. There is a gate that opens in the morning and closes in the evening.

It is also a burial ground. Stay on the established paths, particularly near the limestone headlands, which are fragile and are not a place to scramble around.

If there is a Hawaiian monk seal on the sand, stay at least 50 feet back, or 150 feet if it is a mother with a pup. They are endangered and they haul out on these beaches to rest. If volunteers have roped off the area around a seal, listen to their instructions at all times. Give sea turtles at least 10 feet. Then give them the beach and keep walking.

And stay back from the cliff edges. They are undercut in places and the rock is softer than it looks.

Before you go

A few things worth knowing right now.

Check with us before you ride out. Maha'ulepu is private land, and access out there can change without much notice. Give us a call the morning you are thinking of going and we will tell you what we know. It is a fifteen minute ride out to find a closed gate, and we would rather save you the trip.

Makauwahi Cave is closed. You will find guides online listing it as open with hours, and that information is years out of date. The reserve closed in 2024 and has not reopened. Grove Farm has said it intends to bring it back, but there is no date, so do not build your afternoon around it.

Conditions after the storm. Hurricane Lowell hit the South Shore in September and the west end of the coast took the worst of it. The east side, which is this ride, came through far better. Shipwreck took storm surge and the sand has moved around out there. Things are still settling week to week, which is the other reason the phone call above is worth making.

The practical bits

We are open Tuesday through Sunday, 9am to 3pm, closed Mondays, and bikes can come back as late as 8pm. For this one you want to head out in the morning and give yourself a few hours.

Electric bikes start at $50 and regular bikes at $20, from two hours up to a full week. Helmets and locks are included. If riding over from your hotel or condo does not suit you, we deliver across the South Shore for a $50 delivery fee.

If you are not sure this one is your speed, call us and ask. It is a walk, not a hike, but it is four miles round trip in the sun and that is not everybody's afternoon. We would rather tell you honestly than have you find out two miles in.
